Parvovirus is a virus that is a life threatening contagion of dogs, especially unvaccinated puppies. The virus infects cells in the intestinal tract thus causing sloughing of the lining of the intestines. This causes a variety of clinical signs starting with lethargy progressing to very bloody diarrhea and vomiting. It is life threatening because it leads to severe dehydration and in effect starvation because the animal is unable to eat, digest or absorb nutrients. There is no cure for the virus; however, we can provide supportive care to the patient via IV fluid therapy, nutritional supplementation, pain medications and sometimes antibiotic therapy if indicated. When the puppy is having the diarrhea, the virus is spread via the feces and may lead to contamination of yards and infection to other dogs/puppies. Additionally, the puppy can shed the virus in the feces up to 2 weeks after being released from the hospital. Even more concerning is the fact that the virus can remain viable in the environment for years if not properly disinfected. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to properly disinfect when you have had a puppy with parvovirus in your household. We generally recommend that all toys, bedding, and hard surfaces (including crates, kennels, flooring, mats and concrete slabs) be cleaned with a 1:30 dilute bleach solution to help disinfect the area. All future puppies should complete a booster vaccination schedule with your veterinarian. This is an easily preventable disease that is still very common but with only supportive care available to treat it. The general hospitalization time is anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks depending how the puppy responds to therapy and clears the virus. The cost of care can range from $400 up to $2500. Fortunately for us, the vaccine is almost 100% effective if given properly. Now, there are 1 and 3 year vaccinations available to make it easy for us to keep our pets protected.

We are sorry we will miss you, but here is a brief summary of the new additions to our practice:
BGVC Online! Relaunching in August is our online store and upgraded website. The online store, VetsFirstChoice, features automatic prescription refills, free shipping on heartworm preventative and flea control products, common items found in our clinic such as Sentinel and Interceptor, and items we do not stock such as toys, shampoos, and Heartgard. Unlike many other online pharmacies, our online store provides manufacturer guaranteed products at competitive prices. In addition you will be supporting our local practice and in turn helping to keep the cost of service lower. You can find this online store as well as updated client education topics, doctor and employee bios, and news bulletins on our website:
Interceptor Heartworm Prevention Protecting against heartworms is an important part of monthly wellness care and is strongly encouraged by our doctors. We carry two products for heartworm prevention: Interceptor Flavor Tabs and Sentinel. Sentinel, like Interceptor, protects against heartworms, roundworms, hookworms and whipworms but also includes a flea sterilization product. Fleas can be found in our area potentially year round and once contracted can be very difficult to exterminate from your pet’s environment.
HomeAgain Microchips We are currently placing internationally recognized HomeAgain Microchips. We will microchip your pet and pay for the first year’s membership for a reduced cost of $36.99. For more information on HomeAgain microchips, please visit their website at HomeAgain.com.
Puck Fund for Needy Animals We currently have a fund in memory of a past patient, Puck, for animals without a home who are in need of emergency medical attention. The money from this fund will be used to cover the cost of procedures necessary to stabilize and bring back to good health. It is then our hope that this animal will become adoptable without the hindrance of a large medical bill. While it is not our intention to become a rescue hospital, we would like to have the ability to help occasional stray animals in need. If you would like to donate to this fund, please contact our office or send a check payable to BGVC with a memo of “Puck Fund.” Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your continued support of our clinic. It is our goal to provide the best care for our patients and the best service for our clients. If you have any comments or suggestions on how to improve these areas, please let them be known. Your input is valued greatly and we will try to accommodate any requests you have.

We’re Changing Our Online Store
By Eric • July 26th, 2011
Starting today, we will be reopening our original online store, Vet’s First Choice.
Ever since we switched to Vetcentric, we’ve been listening to your feedback on the service. And after hearing your thoughts, we’ve decided that the original store offered lower and more stable prices, as well as an easier way to do your shopping.
We’re excited to be back with our original service, and think that it’s a decision that will truly benefit you. Thanks to everyone for your feedback!
If you’re new to our online store, feel free to browse around a little bit. Let us know your thoughts!
Finally, remember to keep your pets hydrated — it’s hot out there!

Welcome to the new BGVC.net!
By Eric • July 7th, 2011
As pet caretakers, we believe that it’s our job to maintain a close relationship with our clients. Our new website is part of a wider effort to build a closer relationship with you and your pet beyond the examination room. You will begin to see more opportunities for feedback, more advice from Dr. Wittke, more frequent polls, and a cleaner layout.
The goals and features of the new website are:
- Better client education
- Social media integration
- Cleaner, more accessible layout
These changes will be integrated gradually, so stay tuned as we work to build a stronger relationship with you and your pet. And since this website was built with you in mind, your feedback is always appreciated. If you have any suggestions, questions or comments, then please leave them in the feedback form below.
Finally, thank you to all who participated in our July Pet of the Month competition on Facebook. We loved all of the photos, and stay tuned for more!
